Date: Nov – Dec 2024 Setting: WV College class Role: Research, visual designs, iteration, prototyping & testing.
Overview
Identified user needs through personas. Created new screens, app features and UI elements which blend seamlessly with existing design style in app. Conducted A/B testing with users to refine design decisions.
1. There is no way to plan future workouts which makes the app unfriendly for people who have high fitness goals (ex. training for a triathlon).
2. It is difficult to find a specific workout when searching through past activity.
1. Introduce workout scheduling to aid people in reaching their fitness goals.
2. Introduce automatic and customizable workout tags, which allow workouts to be searched by tag.
Problem 1:
Before
Past workouts are the only things listed.
After
Both past and scheduled workouts appear on the summary page.
Problem 2:
Before
Only able to search by activity type. Workouts are listed by date completed and distance traveled (or calories burned).
After
Tags appear on individual workouts and are searchable in the list of past workouts.
My first step was to conduct user testing. I interviewed three people to get a sense of how they used the app and what they wanted from it. From the qualitative data gathered from them, I found three guiding insights:
1. Planning must be easy and quick.
No one I interviewed was interested in complex planning that would take up their valuable time. They didn't see planning as a requirement, but they acknowledged the benefits it could bring.
2. Interested in workout suggestions.
Interviewees were interested in automated suggestions which would help them increase fitness.
3. Plan must be flexible.
Those I interviewed stressed that physical activity is one part of their busy lives, not the focus of it. With this in mind, any planned workouts must be flexible to the changing needs of their schedules.
A big part of the design process was going through many design iterations in order to find the best solution, not just the first. One example is the display of cards for scheduled workouts.
First design
Looks too similar to past workouts. Design relies on icons and colour for distinction from completed workouts.
Post iteration
Appears different from completed workouts at a glance, and is more accessible for colourblind users.
Interesting note: shortly after completing this project, Apple introduced their own update to this app, which included their own fixes to the needs I identified in this project.
